I'm afraid this is mostly re-post (if not on this blog, well, I'm sure I posted it somewhere) -- but it has been a long, mad week...so! For you I have a wee mustelidae sporting arms:
Also, the best motherfucking Game of Thrones character hands down and you know it.
Hey does your room turn into a magical goddamn fairyland at night? Because it should.
(No, it will never be this clean again)
Hey it is time for things about books.

"Reality is a funny thing. There are no defenses against it except madness."
So my friend loaned me this book, and it was fantastic! It's hard to track down, apparently -- she mentioned she'd tried to dig up more information on the author and hadn't had any luck, so I gave it a shot and I struck out too (but I'm really curious now, because it's a great read). There's a tiny blurb at the end of the book, but it's just a fucking tease:
"David W. Elliott was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1939. By the age of thirteen he had lived with some fifteen different families. At that time he decided to run away from the first month of the tenth grade and the fifteenth family to see the world. He did. Mr. Elliott now lives in a small town in New York State about fifty miles north of New York City."
If you (dear whoever-reads-this) can dig up more, then: +1 internets unto thee.
"They should put all the nuts in the world in front of a firing squad, he says. But who would be left to pull the triggers, I say."
Under morphine, Billy had a dream of giraffes in a garden. The giraffes were following gravel paths, were pausing to munch sugar pears from treetops. Billy was a giraffe, too. He ate a pear. It was a hard one. It fought back against his grinding teeth. It snapped in juicy protest.
The giraffes accepted Billy as one of their own, as a harmless creature as preposterously specialized as themselves. Two approached him from opposite sides, leaned against him. They had long, muscular upper lips which they could shape like the bells of bugles. They kissed him with these. They were female giraffes--cream and lemon yellow. They had horns like doorknobs. The knobs were covered with velvet.
Why?

Billy Pilgrim opened his eyes in the hospital in Vermont, did not know where he was. Watching him was his son Robert. Robert was wearing the uniform of the famous Green Berets. Robert's hair was short, was wheat-colored bristles. Robert was clean and neat. He was decorated with a Purple Heart and a Silver Star and a Bronze Star with two clusters.
This was a boy who had flunked out of high school, who had been an alcoholic at sixteen, who had run with a rotten bunch of kids, who had been arrested for tipping over hundreds of tombstones in a Catholic cemetery one time. He was all straightened out now. His posture was wonderful and his shoes were shined and his trousers were pressed, and he was a leader of men.
"Dad--?"
Billy Pilgrim closed his eyes again.

Robert Kennedy, whose summer home is eight miles from the home I live in all year round, was shot two nights ago. He died last night. So it goes. Martin Luther King was shot a month ago. He died, too. So it goes. And every day my Government gives me a count of corpses created by military science in Vietnam. So it goes. My father died many years ago now--of natural causes. So it goes. He was a sweet man. He was a gun nut, too. He left me his guns. They rust.

Finally, I picked up The Rapture of the Nerds after foolishly leaving the first Cory Doctorow book I purchased at a bar before I'd finished it (SILLY). RotN is co-authored by one Charles Stross, an author I'm similarly unfamiliar with -- though one of his books caught my eye awhile back because, really, how can you just mosey on by when somebody straight-up titles a book Rule 34? How do you do that
These very fine gents with their hive-minds and gender-swapping and robo-moms and swarms of fucking ants and TOTALLY DESERVED jabs at Comic Sans and stretchy singularity time. Also look at these things!
A dream. Of course it was all a dream. Except she's standing in the middle of an infinite white plain, beneath a sky the color of a high-def video monitor sucking signal from a dead channel (saturated electric blue), and the plain is featureless in all directions save for a black hexagonal mesh grid--a tabletop strategy game for retarded superbeings.
Hello there. There have been a lot of good and not-so-good things going down recently, but one of those not-so-good things is the headache I have right now, so I'm going to skip all the goings-down and jump right into anime, because it's mostly pictures.
So first off, I had a lovely night out at the Flicks/downtown last week, which unfortunately ended with a bike wreck and the loss of my wallet. The bike wreck wasn't too bad, thankfully -- I was wearing my helmet, but I only scraped up my arm and hip a bit (although I'm still pretty bruised & sore). The wallet had a few sentimental things in t, so that sucked to lose -- but I managed to get most of the important cards/such replaced before we went out of town this weekend.
Friday we headed to the northern wilds of our fair state for family reunion shenanigans, which were delightful. It was really good to see that (my Mom's) side of the family -- my aunt Kathy(Cathy? Damn >_<) helped me break some rules, we played at a water park with the kids, drank things in hot tubs, had some awesome family sing alongs, rode a giant gondola (well, I passed on the gondola)... just all kinds of good times. I wish we could have stayed a few more days in between all the driving -- and I still wish I'd gotten to catch up with more people, but there were a lot of folks to talk to as well as a lot going on, so it can't be helped, I suppose.
Been kind of bummed out since we got back -- at first I was attributing it to social overload, but I had some time to hang out on my own yesterday & I'm still dragging a bit. I got a little drawing done, but the house is a mess and I just keep looking at it, getting fed up, and jumping back into the book I'm reading -- as though ignoring it will somehow help. Good book, though, to be fair.
Today I had a very nice lunch, followed by AWESOME hangouts, mellowed by a bit of disappointment later -- all different situations, but the day's been kind of a strange wave overall -- and in that weird introspective kinda way, it's currently being brought up a bit by the storm outside; daaaaaaaaaaaamn! It's coming down out there. O____O
Hey, I have a million things for you, as uuuuuuusual...but a lot of them are on the other computer, SO! You get off light for now.
HEY SPOILERS NIGHTVALE WAS AMAAAAZING. I learned I could probably handle a few centipedes. I heard FANTASTIC music. I got to be part of a crowd full of amazing people and wonderfulness. There was barhopping afterward, and reconnecting with old friends, and great conversation -- the night was a definite success.
The next day was a ball of madness, but today has been a success as well. Had some lovely folks over for beer and cupcakes and painting, and it was the delightfullest.
(It was amazing. The entire night was amazing.) OH YEAH GUESS WHO GOIN TO NIGHT VALE
Also EVEN MORE awesome plans this week, just all the fuck over the place ALSO GUESS WHOSE PHONE HAS BEEN DEAD ALL DAYYYY D:
Guess who has a really long, overdue post of awesome stuff you need to see
Seriously though, why didn't anyone inform me of this
Thank you, Dandy.
I just started it, so this is based purely on title (and in that sense echoing an aspect of the same satisfaction I get from Wizard Barristers), but: I love that there exists a show called Bodacious Space Pirates. I just fucking love that someone can ask me what the hell I'm watching and that's what I get to respond with. Oh, Japan: thank you.
PARFATE
TWINKLE
"Derp."
A little predictable setup-wise so far, but as you can see it has some real gems. Hey, speaking of anime: more like no game no waifuamirite?!
I was reading some stuff the other day that got me thinking about this lecture about desire, and this lecture about Simone de Beauvoir.
Bonds. Human Bonds. *drinks martini*
